Conformity isn’t an absolute but it’s certainly a strong urge. We want to be accepted. We want to be liked. We want to fit in. We’re social creatures. We want to be part of the group.

I couldn’t say for certain whether true individuals are born or created, but I think it’s some combination of both. Regardless, we have a propensity to behave as part of the group. It is easy to go along with the herd. It is easy to float downstream.

If there’s one thing we like, it’s easy. Easy is the quickest payoff. Easy is the least effort. Easy is the least risk. Easy is the easiest to rationalize. You can’t shut a brain down, but you can make it move on, move downstream, to more trivial matters with a solid rationalization.

There’s one rationalization, the king of rationalizations, that destroys all thought everywhere. This rationalization can pacify entire generations. This rationalization can paralyze entire nations. This rationalization can blow your brain out of your skull and into the wind.
